Beyond being a striking decorative piece, this display doubles as an educational tool that demonstrates the mechanics of celestial movement.
This model includes a full set of nine planets, including Pluto, together with 28 moons. A dynamic display shows the Moon tracing its path around Earth while Earth itself journeys around the Sun.
Interestingly, Mercury makes 1,028 trips around the Sun for every single orbit Pluto completes, with Mercury's orbit taking about 4 seconds compared with Pluto's 4 hours in the model's mechanism.
The Sun, planets and moons are made from fine semi-precious stone spheres; brass planet versions with stone moons are available by special order. The piece runs on batteries unless another option is specified.
An eye-catching mechanism sits fully exposed beneath the rotating planets, revealing a detailed set of solid brass gears at work.
The refined craftsmanship continues with a twelve-sided oak barrel that houses the gear assembly, resting elegantly on twelve solid brass feet for an added touch of sophistication.
